Counselling for Addiction
Addiction is the behaviour of an individual who has a strong uncontrollable urge to continue repetitive behaviour. This can be in the form of substance abuse or activities such as gambling. Exercise, food, the internet or sex addictions are common in the contemporary world. Addictions and the subsequent losses involved can be very difficult for the individual and those who care for them.
So why do addictions develop and how can they be treated?
We believe that there is no single reason why addictions are formed and we can locate some of the underlying causes. There is a fine line sometimes between abuse and addiction and the individual does not often recognise that they have an addictive side to them and the damage this can cause to them and their family and friends.
Many addictions will reward the individual by stimulating the brain’s reward pathways and this can be a very hard cycle to break. This can lead to it becoming very difficult for the individual to quit their addictions on their own.
Counselling can help to identify how emotional behaviour can be regulated to overcome the loss of addictive behaviour. If you feel you are having problems with any addiction please contact us for an appointment.
Unfortunately, we aren’t able to see clients who we feel are physically addicted to substances as we feel that residential options with detox are the best options. Please call if you are unsure as to your current condition and we will be willing to give you any advice we feel would be helpful.
